The last Euro Conference on Operational Research was held in the Poznan University of Technology during the first week of July. I participated in the conference with the follwing two contributions:
Last June 2016 Mr. Daniel Ramon Lumbierres presented the MSc Thesis Optimal Supply Chain Strategy through Stochastic Programming in the Master of Statistics and Operations Research (MESIO). This thesis is the result of the collaboration of Mr. Ramon in the funded research project Digitalizing Supply Chain Strategy with 3D Printing granted by Accenture Technology Labs and was advised by prof. F.-Javier Heredia. A summary of this MSc Thesis has been presented in the 28th European Conference on Operational Research. The MSc Thesis Comission of the MESIO awarded that thesis with the highest grade "Matrícula de Honor" (A with Honours).
As a part of the Accenture Open Innovation initiative, Accenture - Tech Labs has awarded 11 research grants to top universities around the world to significantly broaden and deepen the relationships between Accenture’s technology research and development (R&D) groups and leading university researchers.
The project "Digitalizing Supply Chain Strategy with 3D Printing", lead by professor F.-Javier Heredia (GNOM-UPC) and professor Joaquim Minguella, (Fundació CIM-UPC), was one of 11 awarded projects. This research project aims at studying the advantages of ultra-postponement with 3D printing by using analytical tools and mathematical optimization models and algorithms, exploring how to transform supply chain management by allowing delayed and tailored production in the location where demand occurs. The project will be developped in collaboration with the Accenture Analytics Innovation Center (Barcelona) and Accenture Technology Labs (Silicon Valley). In the image, the attendants to the first in person meeting, held at the Faculty of Matematics and Statistics and Fundació CIM, with representants from Accenture Analytics, Accenture Technology Labs, GNOM-UPC and FCIM-UPC.
The first one, Parallel Proximal Bundle Methods for Stochastic Electricity Market Problems in collaboration with Mr. Antonio Rengifo, a former student of our Master in Statistics and Operations Research.
The second one, entitled A multi-objective approach to infrastructure planning in the early stages of EV introduction in collaboration with the Energy Economy group of the Catalonia Institute for Energy Reseach.
Professor Eugenio Mijangos was visiting prof. F.-Javier Heredia at the UPC-BarcelonaTech research gropu GNOM during November 27 to 28 to start-up the tasks related with the research project FOWGEM . As a result, they are going to undertake the application of the implementation of the BFC algorithm developped by professor Mijangos to solve the multistage stochastic programming model for the multimarket optimal generation bid formulated by prof. Heredia and Dr. Corchero described in the work Efficient solution of optimal multimarket electricity bid models (Corchero, Heredia, Mijangos, DOI: 10.1109/EEM.2011.5953017). This is a previous step for the resolution of the IOGET model.
On July 2014 Barcelona hosted the 20th Conference of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS2014), one the most important meetings of the international OR community. The 20th edition of this conference was organized by the OR community in the different universities of Catalonia, under the leadership of prof. Elena Fernández, from the UNiversitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech. I had the opportunity to contribute to this event as a member of the Organizing Committee as well as organizing a very successfull stream on Optimization Models and Algorithms in Energy Industry (28 contributions), together with my friend and colleague Dr. Cristina Corchero (Catalonian Institute for Energy Research, IREC). I also presented the work Stochastic Optimal Bid to Electricity Markets with Emission Risk Constraints, co-authored with Julián Cifuentes , a former student of the Master in Statistics and Operations Research, and Dr. Cristina Corchero.

Dr. Cristina Corchero (IREC) and professor F.-Javier Heredia (GNOM) were the advisors of these two works developped at the facilities of the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC).
El Grupo de Optimización Numérica y Modelización (GNOM, SGR-2014-542) del Departamento de Estadística e Investigación Operativa de la UPC, busca candidatos que deseen presentarse a la convocatoria de becas de doctorado FI-DGR 2015 de la Generalitat de Catalunya para la realización de una tesis doctoral sobre optimización matemática en mercados eléctricos.
La tesis doctoral se desarrollará en el grupo de investigación GNOM (https://gnom.upc.edu) dentro del proyecto Forecasting and Optimization of Wind Generation in Energy Markets (FOWGEM, MTM2013-48462-C2-1-R) financiado por el Programa Estatal de I+D+i Orientada a los Retos de la Sociedad del Gobierno de España. Su objetivo es el desarrollo teórico e implementación computacional de algoritmos especializados de optimización matemática para problemas de programación mixta cuadrática de grandes dimensiones. Dichos algoritmos se aplicarán a la resolución de problemas reales de programación estocástica de oferta óptima al mercado eléctrico de compañías productoras en el mercado ibérico de electricidad con generación eólica. El trabajo se realizará bajo la dirección del profesor F.-Javier Heredia Cervera.
The paper Optimal Energy Management for a Residential Microgrid Including Vehicle-to-Grid System has been published in IEEE Transactions on Smart Grids. This work, done in collaboration with the Energy Economics group of the Catalonian Institute for Energy Research (IREC), proposes an optimization model to manage a residential microgrid including a charging spot with a vehicle-to-grid system and renewable energy sources.
